Welcome to Trezor Start
Your journey to sovereign security begins here.
Congratulations on choosing Trezor, the original and most trusted hardware wallet. This guide will help you unbox, set up, and start protecting your digital assets with confidence. The process is simple, secure, and designed to put you in absolute control.
Before you start, please ensure you are on trezor.io/start and that you purchased your device from an official reseller or our shop.trezor.io. Beware of phishing sites and pre-initialized devices.
1. Unbox Your Trezor
Open your package and verify you have:
-
Trezor Device (Model T or Safe 3)
-
USB-C Cable
-
Recovery Seed Card(s) (Paper backup cards)
-
Trezor Stickers
-
Lanyard (Model T)
-
Quick Start Guide
Inspect the device and its holographic seal for any signs of tampering. Your Trezor should be pristine and the seal intact.
2. Connect & Install
-
Connect your Trezor to your computer using the provided USB cable.
-
Visit Trezor Suite Web or download the desktop application for the full, feature-rich experience. Trezor Suite is your secure dashboard for everything.
-
Your browser/Suite will prompt you to install the latest firmware. This is a critical security step. Always ensure you have the latest firmware installed.
3. Create Your New Wallet
-
After firmware installation, choose "Create new wallet."
-
You will be guided through the most important step: Backup.
4. The Backup: Your Key to Recovery
This is the core of your security. Your recovery seed is a unique list of 12, 18, or 24 words generated by your device.
-
Your Trezor will display the words one by one on its screen. Write them down in order on your provided recovery seed card.
-
Never, ever digitize these words. No photos, cloud notes, or typing them on a keyboard.
-
Store multiple copies in safe, separate physical locations (e.g., home safe, safety deposit box).
-
This seed is your wallet. Anyone with these words can access your funds. Your Trezor is just a secure key to use them.
Complete the interactive check in Trezor Suite to verify you’ve written the seed correctly.
5. Set Your PIN
-
Add a PIN for daily protection. This prevents physical unauthorized access.
-
The PIN is entered on your computer screen using the randomized keypad, but confirmed on your Trezor device screen. This means even a malicious computer cannot learn your PIN.
-
Choose a PIN of 1-50 digits. Make it memorable but not guessable.
6. You're Ready! Explore Trezor Suite
Your device is now set up and secured. Trezor Suite will open to your dashboard. Here’s what you can do:
-
Receive Crypto: Go to the "Accounts" tab, select an asset, and click "Receive." Your Trezor will display the receiving address—always verify it on the device screen before sending.
-
Send Crypto: Click "Send," enter the amount and address. Confirm all details on your Trezor's screen.
-
Buy, Sell, & Exchange: Use the integrated partners to acquire crypto directly to your secure wallet or swap between assets.
-
Explore Features: Use Coinjoin for enhanced privacy, stake supported assets, or manage your portfolio with confidence.
Why This Process is Secure
-
Offline Seed Generation: Your recovery seed is created in the isolated chip of your Trezor, never exposed to the internet.
-
Phishing Protection: You confirm every transaction and address on the device screen, so you cannot be tricked by fake websites.
-
Open-Source: All our software and firmware are open for community inspection, ensuring no backdoors.
-
PIN & Passphrase: Two-factor security for both physical and digital threats.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. What if I lose my Trezor or it gets stolen?
This is exactly what the recovery seed is for. Simply purchase a new Trezor (or use any compatible wallet software in an emergency), select "Recover wallet," and enter your 12, 18, or 24-word recovery seed in the exact order. Your funds, accounts, and transaction history will be restored. Your PIN alone is not enough for recovery.
2. Can I use my Trezor with other wallets like MetaMask?
Yes! Trezor integrates seamlessly with many third-party wallets. For MetaMask, simply connect your Trezor via the "Connect Hardware Wallet" option in MetaMask. Remember: You will still confirm transactions on your Trezor screen, adding a vital security layer even when using dApps and DeFi protocols.
3. I forgot my PIN. What do I do?
Do not worry. After 10 consecutive incorrect PIN attempts, the Trezor device will wipe itself to protect against brute-force attacks. To regain access, you will need to perform a device recovery using your recovery seed card (see FAQ #1). Your funds are safe as long as you have your seed.
4. What is the "Passphrase" feature (hidden wallet)?
This is an advanced security feature, often called a "25th word." It's an extra word you memorize (or store separately from your seed) that creates a completely hidden wallet. Even if someone discovers your 24-word seed, they cannot access your passphrase-protected funds without this additional secret. You can enable it in Trezor Suite under Settings > Device > Passphrase.
5. Do I need to update firmware, and is it safe?
Yes, and yes. Firmware updates are essential as they contain critical security improvements, new features, and support for more assets. The update process is signed by SatoshiLabs and verified by your device. Only install updates prompted directly within the official Trezor Suite application.
6. My Trezor screen is damaged or buttons aren't working. Is my crypto lost?
Not at all. Your cryptocurrency is not stored on the physical device; it's on the blockchain. Your device only secures the keys. As long as you have your recovery seed, you can recover everything onto a new device. Contact our support for potential repair or replacement options for the hardware itself.
